Smith Center for Athletics and Wellness

The David M. and Sheila H. Smith Center for Athletics and Wellness opened in September 2002. This state-of-the-art facility is one of the finest athletic and wellness centers among independent schools. It’s where the Brewster Bobcats’ interscholastic sports teams train and play, where intramurals and recreational sports games are held, and where the entire campus community stays in shape.

The 50,000-square-foot complex offers fitness and play opportunities that are second to none. It has the only convertible turf floor of any independent school. In just 20 minutes, the artificial turf rolls out across the two basketball courts, creating a surface on which sports such as baseball, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis can be played. The turf offers an alternative place to practice during inclement weather and adds to the array of intramural and recreational options available on campus.

A list of features includes:

  • Convertible turf floor
  • Four-lane, 200-meter track on the mezzanine level with open viewing to the court area and 360-degree views of our campus, the lake, and the mountains
  • 5,000 square-foot extensive athletic training and fitness center housing the latest free weights, cardiovascular equipment, and Body Masters machines
  • Rowing tank for year-round crew practices
  • Athletic trainer's, rehabilitation, and physical therapy room with hydrotherapy area
  • Tournament basketball court with two full practice courts
  • Floor-to-ceiling netting for multi-purpose use, including baseball, lacrosse, and soccer
  • Seating and acoustical sound for 500-plus spectators
  • Athletic Hall of Fame and classroom
  • Coach, referee, and locker rooms

The David M. and Sheila H. Smith Center for Athletics and Wellness is named for David M. Smith who first came to Brewster in 1969 as a history teacher, coach, and dorm parent. From 1974 to 2003, David served the community as headmaster. The center also is named for Sheila H. Smith who was the Academy's associate director of admission for nearly 20 years. The Smiths three sons Tim '91, Dan '93, and James '95 are graduates of the Academy. David and Sheila retired in June 2003.
