Alumni Athlete Spotlight By Connor Wells, Athletic Director

Alumni Athlete Spotlight: Morgan Bovardi '22

Morgan Bovardi '22 of Boxford, Massachusetts was an exceptional three-sport athlete at Brewster (in Girls' Soccer, Basketball, and Lacrosse) during her postgraduate year in 2021-2022. Now in her senior season with NCAA Division 1 Sacred Heart University Women's Soccer, Bovardi continues to stand out for the Pioneers.

As a postgraduate at Brewster, Bovardi won the 2021 NEPSAC Class C Girls' Soccer Championship with the Bobcats, which included an undefeated season. She scored a team leading 32 goals, 17 assists, and had 80 shots that fall. She was a Lakes Region League All-Star, All-NEPSAC Player, Boston Globe MVP, and was the Class C NEPSAC Player of the Year in Girls' Soccer. Bovardi was also a key starting guard on Brewster's 2021-2022 Class C NEPSAC Girls' Basketball Championship team. And, as if she had not contributed enough to Brewster Athletics, later that spring in 2022, she was a leading scorer once again—this time for Brewster Girls' Varsity Lacrosse—playing midfield and helping the team earn a regular season Lakes Region League Championship title.

Morgan and I caught up this fall, amidst her senior campaign at Sacred Heart as her team was scheduled to take on Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent Merrimack College (Mass.) later this evening.

What are some of your best memories as a Brewster student-athlete?
Winning the NEPSAC Championship in Soccer and Basketball were my two biggest memories at Brewster. The players on both teams were so close with one another. And a few girls like myself played both soccer and basketball: Courtney Quirk '22, Fiona Connolly '22,  Lexi Diers '22, Luce Colcord '25, and I were exceptionally close. Our closeness as teammates is what got us our championships.

One specific memory from my soccer season was our night game on the road at Phillips Exeter early in the school year. This game was really special, as so many of our Brewster fans came to cheer us on. It was a super-fun environment to play in—and I was getting to experience in high school what it would be like to play in college. I was ready for that environment when I eventually began playing at the next level. It showed me how special Brewster was too, still being a new student at the time, and how much support the students had for one another. I had never experienced anything like that before: students traveling this far for an away game to support me and my teammates.

How did Brewster prepare you for what you're doing now in your sport?
The Exeter game—playing in front of many rowdy fans—is one example. These types of games, and others against strong opponents, prepared me for high-level competition in college.  My Brewster coaches in all my sports also helped me grow into the teammate and leader I am now.

Who had an impact on you, in the classroom and on the field?
I had a lot of great teachers and coaches at Brewster who all pushed me. Coach [Matt] Butcher was who recruited me for girls' soccer, and he always pushed and challenged me every day. What I recall most is that he believed in me as a player. This helped prepare me for playing at the next level—and built my confidence as an athlete. I also need to give a shout out to Coach "Coop" [Mrs. Laura Cooper], who I had as an assistant coach in both soccer and lacrosse. She was present every day, always supportive, and I knew she believed in me too.

What has been your greatest moment playing in college?
Making it to the conference finals my freshman year at Sacred Heart was an incredible moment. Even though we didn't win this game, it was an amazing experience. We hosted FDU (Farleigh-Dickinson University). We were the #3 seed and they were the #4 seed. I scored the game-tying goal to make it 2-2 with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. I kind of blacked out a little when this happened. All I remember is my teammates running over and congratulating me, and celebrating with them. It was a great feeling. The support I felt in that moment  was awesome. We ended up losing this playoff game in penalty kicks—but it was still a great experience. I definitely want to do this again in my senior year now. Our team has moved to the MAAC conference, which is tougher competition. The players are a little bigger and a little better. We are doing well thus far and excited for the challenge and our playoff push.

And do you consider that your greatest accomplishment since leaving Brewster?
When I first got to Sacred Heart, I felt my greatest accomplishment was just getting there as a Division I soccer player. My hard work had paid off, and I was playing and helping the team as a freshman.  But, since then my biggest accomplishment is being named team Captain this year. The younger girls look up to me, and this means a lot.  I have to continue to lead them and this team on and off the field. When times get tough, helping them through those tough times, and supporting them as people (not just soccer players) is most important.

What advice would you give to current Brewster students? Or current members of the Brewster Girls' Varsity Soccer team?
I would say to both groups: Enjoy the time at Brewster (and playing soccer). Don't take any of it for granted. It will be over before you know it. Enjoy all the time you have together with your teammates and friends: bus rides, practices, hard times, and good times. You're going to miss it eventually. Stay in touch with your teammates and friends after high school. I try to do this as best I can, even though we are all so busy in college. I still touch base with Lauren Ward '22 (playing Women's Lacrosse at Fairfield University close by Sacred Heart), and Caitlyn Toom '22 (playing Women's Soccer at the University of New Haven). We actually scrimmaged Caitlyn and her New Haven team earlier this year and it was cool to catch up with her.

What are your plans after college?
I do want to be involved in sports in some way. I am majoring in Sports Management with a minor in Marketing. I might want to get involved with coaching, but I am not sure. I am possibly interested in marketing work for a professional sports team or college program. But I am still figuring all this out. I have one month left of high level collegiate soccer, and that's my primary focus right now.

Currently sitting in second place in the MAAC conference (among 13 schools), Bovardi's Sacred Heart team is positioned well for a playoff run. She has started all 12 games this season at forward, netting seven goals and one assist. In her career at Sacred Heart, Bovardi has been a top scorer with 26 goals, 7 assists, 149 shots, and played an exceptional 4,810 minutes to date. A big Bobcat Nation shout out to Bovardi and all of her accomplishments at Brewster and in college. Good luck in your senior season, Morgan, and we hope to see you sometime soon back on campus at Brewster!
