EYBL Powerhouse: Brewster’s National Team Keeps Rising

Some people might be surprised to learn that some of the highest nationally ranking boys' high school basketball is played in the small town of Wolfeboro, N.H. For those who know Brewster, however, the caliber of talent on Brewster's EYBL National team is something they're used to. Spend a few minutes in the Smith Center and it won't take long for a spectator to take in the scene: players finishing incredibly skilled plays, a wall lined with NBA jerseys of Brewster alumni (25 NBA alumni, to be exact), and a roster filled with top-star recruits all being recruited by Division 1 programs.

Brewster's talented basketball program is nothing new. Coach Jason Smith, who started coaching at Brewster in 2000, is responsible for what Brewster basketball has become. Last year, he clocked his 650th career win. He is also helping the program to continue to reach new heights and wider exposure, for both the players and the school. Two years ago, Brewster was invited to join the inaugural Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) Scholastic League. This invite-only league, stemming from Nike's EYBL, brings together some of the most exceptional high school teams in the nation into one league. The teams travel around the country to compete in nationally televised competitions, culminating in a bid into the ESPN Chipotle Nationals at the end of the season.

Last year, Brewster earned their spot at ESPN Chipotle Nationals after tying for the regular season crown with a 9-2 mark. They finished third in the nation.

But let's focus on the upcoming season for Brewster. In the December 1, 2025 ESPN Top 25 High School Boys' Basketball team rankings, SportsCenter Next put Brewster at #7 in the nation. The team has started strong this season with a 9-0 record. But the real fun will start when league play begins next weekend.

This year, the Nike EYBL Scholastic League expanded from 14 to 20 teams. It also created  East and West Divisions (Brewster sits in the East Division). Our National EYBL team will travel to seven Nike EYBL showcase events, which will be televised on stations and apps that include ESPN+ and NBA TV. These events also give an opportunity for Brewster families, alumni, and fans across the U.S. to catch a live game. (See schedule below for dates and locations.)

For the first time, Brewster will also host a league opponent on Friday, February 27, against CATS Academy. This unprecedented game will no doubt see a huge crowd turnout from students, Brewster employees, and locals alike.

The Brewster National Team's competition in the Nike EYBL Scholastic League may be the focus of their season, but it's not the only feature. With more than 35 regular season games, 16 are home games played on Radley Court. Often played in the evening, these games inspire a lively student section, often dressed in theme. School spirit is high as students cheer on their classmates, dormmates, and friends on the court–who just happen to be some of the best basketball players in the nation.

Brewster also opens its doors to the local community free of charge. It's no surprise that young players come with their families to take in the magic on the court, sometimes even scoring an autograph after the game. Dedicated local fans also fill in the bleachers, developing relationships with the team, coaches, and school. Alumni follow along with the team from afar, tuning into the national rankings and watching the games on television.

For the Brewster players, they get to compete at the highest high school level, garnering national exposure as they pursue their collegiate and professional basketball careers. Just as importantly, they get to do so amid a sea of support, both athletically and academically. Within classes, they're benefiting from Brewster's purposeful education and teaching practices. Outside of the classroom, they belong to the school community. When not training or traveling for showcases (which Brewster teachers accommodate), you can find them engaging in advisory activities, hanging out with friends in the dorm lounge or student center, and participating in weekend activities, to name a few.

As fans anticipate this year's calendar, filled with rematches against nationally ranked rivals, neutral-site showdowns in an NBA-affiliated event, and home games that turn the Smith Center into the liveliest gym in town, one thing is certain: Some of the most exciting high school basketball in the country is happening right here on Lake Winnipesaukee.
