June 30, 2015 – Current head coach Kim Yau and assistant Janis Cornwell led this championship team. “We are very fortunate to have these two still heading the program,” Lawlor said. “Kim and Janis have been our head coach and assistant coach, respectively, since 2002. Thank you both for all you do for this program and the Academy.”
The 2004 team became the first field hockey team in Brewster history to win the New England Class C title. The team earned the title in a triple overtime win, which ultimately went to penalty strokes, over league rival Holderness School. Sophomore Janna Anctil ’07 and senior Elizabeth (Ward) Lopez ’05 captained the team that season.
Lopez, a three-year member of the varsity field hockey team, who continued her studies at College of the Redwoods, travelled from San Luis Obispo, California, for the ceremony. Anctil, a four-year varsity team member, continued her playing career at Boston College and is now head field hockey coach at the Rivers School in Massachusetts. This past fall she led her team to the 2014 Class C field hockey New England championship – winning the same title as 10 years previously but this time as coach.
Lopez thanked coaches Yau and Cornwell for giving her and her teammates a foundation of strength in their lives and shared that the memories from her Brewster field hockey days are still very much a part of her. The two captains then shared 10 memorable highlights from the 2004 season, including the themed PowerPoint presentations the team watched before games; walking from the Smith Center to Brown Field silently, in pairs, prior to games; the laminated one-way “tickets to victory” that coaches Yau and Cornwell handed out as they boarded the bus to what would become their championship weekend; and being able to wear their purple championship t-shirts for spirit days every Wednesday and Saturday on campus.
