Athletic Hall of Fame
June 3, 2017 – Assistant Head of School Peter Hess was inducted as an honorary member of the Hall of Fame. Hess, who is coming to a successful 29-year close to his Brewster career, coached boys’ and girls’ basketball, lacrosse, and alpine ski at Brewster and also shared his coaching talents with the local Abenaki Lacrosse Program. At Hobart College he was a four-year member of the men’s lacrosse team.
“It is an honor to be here today,” he began. “I know I do not stand here before you because of my performances on the Brewster playing fields like Justine, Kate, Kim, and Janna, nor do I stand here for the championship teams I have coached at Brewster like Ron and Sue.”
“I know I’m being recognized for the willingness to find a way to support the Brewster program and specifically the athletic program.
“History is kind of repeating itself here. I was fortunate enough to be a member of the Hobart lacrosse team, which had a long tradition of having a very good lacrosse program. I was thrilled to make the team as a freshman, but I was certainly not the star of the team. I needed to find a way to contribute to the program, and I learned to play two very different positions, goalie and defense, in order to find a way to contribute. But my efforts were recognized as I received the award for the most dedicated player in my senior year, and I remember being quietly thrilled that Hobart had chosen to recognize a contributor like myself to the program and not necessarily someone who was the star of the team.”
He continued, “Fast forward 35 years. There are certainly similarities with this recognition I’m receiving today. I have worked hard to find a way to contribute to Brewster’s athletic program, filling in wherever there was a need and doing my best to provide the students with a positive experience. Likewise, I’m very thrilled and appreciative and eternally grateful that Brewster has found a way to recognize the contributions of someone like myself. … When it was said that ‘I’m who I am today because of Brewster’ I can say that that is very true for me as well.”
