Athletic Hall of Fame
On Saturday, June 1 2019, Luke Apfeld was inducted into the Brewster Athletic Hall of Fame.
Luke was introduced by Director of Athletics, Matt Lawlor. In speaking about Luke, Matt described him as the epitome of a student athlete and a natural leader. Luke played multiple leadership roles as captain of both his Brewster team along with being student body president and was a two-year captain at the University of Vermont where he scored over 1,000 points and received All Academic and All Conference recognition. After graduating from UVM in five years with a masters degree in Education Leadership and Public Policy, he attended law school at UC Berkeley and is currently clerking for Judge Carter in New York’s southern district and is a passionate advocate for civil and human rights.
Luke acknowledged coming to Brewster as a fifteen-year old with a passion for basketball surrounded by a diversity that speaks to the essence of Brewster was bigger than one person or one team. He wondered how a young man from Nigeria, another from Turkey who barely spoke English, and a firecracker player from England would become a cohesive team but somehow they did. Luke recognized his coaches and mentors who shaped and developed them into players and young men. There were no individual records kept because “no accomplishment was on our own. We were a product of those that nourished and loved us and gave us purpose.”
