Kate Turner began at Brewster Academy as Assistant Athletic Director in 1986, when she also founded the school’s field hockey program. She became the venerable Associate Director of Athletics working with multiple Athletic Directors during her tenure. Throughout her years at Brewster, when not sharing in the responsibility of oversight of our athletics programs, she coached alpine skiing, lacrosse, JV tennis, field hockey, and most recently JV field hockey. She is greatly admired for the way she promoted and supported the school’s JV teams, making sure every student had a chance to shine—and to experience the competition and camaraderie of athletics. In 2016 Turner was honored by NEPSAC with the Distinguished Service Award, which is given annually to the individual who has contributed significantly to New England Independent School Athletics and Physical Education through enthusiasm, dedication, leadership, and vision. NEPSAC specifically noted Turner’s role in advancing the importance of female athletics and sports among its membership schools. In the Spring of 2023, Brewster Crew honored Turner with the naming of their new girls’ 4+ shell the “Kate Turner.” Turner’s 35-year tenure at Brewster was incredible—most notably for the bonds she created among student athletes, coaches, families, and colleagues.
