June 30, 2015 – The girls’ 2009 varsity soccer team “was simply dominant” remarked Lawlor in his introduction of the team. They posted an 18-0 record and outscored their opponents 91-6 that season. This team won the school’s second NEPSAC girls’ soccer title defeating the top ranked Groton School 2-1 in a thriller. They also hung a Lakes Region League banner that season.

“Similar to our field hockey team, we are very fortunate to have both coaches still with the program. Head coach Matt Butcher, who took over as head of the program in 2002, and Laura Cooper, who has been with girls’ varsity soccer since her arrival at Brewster in 1999. They are a great combination as well, and I just want to take time to thank and recognize them for all they do for our community.”

Angie Cotherman ‘10, the only captain who could be present at the ceremony, travelled from Chicago to speak on the team’s behalf; Joanna Lawlor ‘10 and Louise Warren ‘10 were the other captains. “Angie was a standout for Brewster soccer for four years and a member of two NEPSAC championship soccer teams,” Lawlor said. She continued her soccer career at Depauw University and graduated last spring.

“Very few things in life are the work of just one person … this honor is as much for you [coach Butcher] as it is for us,” she said.

Cotherman prefaced her remarks by explaining that she reached out to her former teammates and asked them to share words that defined that season: “memorable, determined, passionate, perfection, grit, legendary, collaboration, encouraging, and inspiring” came back. Cotherman added her own: growth.

“We all grow up experiencing achievements and obstacles but we grow, and it’s essential to remember who was a part of that growth,” she said. “This team impacted my life, athletically, socially, and personally. If it weren’t for Kate Rendell’s '10 free-spirited personality, Jo Lawlor’s infectious laugh, or Taylor Booth’s '11sheer determination in the net, growth on and off the field would have never happened. We set the bar really high for one another and we left it all out there. We capitalized on our wins and fought back when we weren’t winning. There was no one person who made this team. We played like a team and essentially we grew like a team. Teamwork made the dream work, and now we are here.”
